Who We Are...
TRANSITION HAWAII is a networking site for those who seek local-scale implementation of Transition models for local communities.
The goal of this site, and many like it, is to unleash the collective genius of local communities to find innovative solutions to the momentous challenges of energy, climate, and economic uncertainty.
Transition seeks to answer the following question:
For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how are we going to:
- drastically reduce carbon emissions (in response to climate change);
- significantly rebuild resilience (in response to peak oil);
- and greatly strengthen our local economy (in response to economic instability)?
Transition Initiatives make no claim to have all the answers. However, by building on the wisdom of the past and accessing the pool of ingenuity, skills and determination in our communities, the solutions can readily emerge.
Things You Can Do Today
- Contact Members above by clicking on their photo. Every photo is one-click access to any person you want to contact anywhere in our community. Welcome them, remembering that each person and each group carries a unique spark capable of warming and enhancing our whole community.
- Greet each other! -- Click periodically on MEMBERS on the menu above to make sure every newcomer is properly greeted. Volunteer to show them around and answer their questions.
- Register Your Local Transition Networking Group -- Let us know who you are and what you're doing that you consider Transition.
- HopeDance Film Library -- more than 500 films that deal with sustainability, spirituality, social justice, 911, peak oil, drama, farming, gardening, permaculture collected over 7 years
- Browse Miltonics Video Collection -- 1200 item video library on everything Transition. Thanks Milton Dixon/Transition Illinois. If you don't see your favorite here, tell Dixon!
- Drop in for a visit to Colorado US -- prototype for all 50 U.S. States -- demonstrates what TRANSITION HAWAII will soon become.
- Invite others to join. -- paste in their emails one per line and a brief message encouraging them to join.
- Update your Transition Resume -- Keep your Resume up-to-date. It's your way to make yourself findable when people are searching.
- Upload your best photo -- click on the guy with the camera if you need assistance photoshopping your photo. We can crop, fix, enhance!
- Install skype from http://skype.com/download -- conference calls, workgroups and tutorials. A centerpiece in our community building. Add LSquiresSkype to your Contacts and he'll greet you at the door!

George Will had quite a few figures in his commentary “There is still no alternative to oil” that suggested there are no supply problems concerning oil. I think there are a few more figures that should be added to assess the oil supply situation.
Review: JM Greer's <i>The Ecotechnic Future</i>
Greer is at his most stimulating when he offers ways of rethinking our ideology and shifting towards more adaptive thinking. I particularly liked his insight on the tragic hero vs. the comedic hero. One dies for ideology while the other manages to come through somehow largely through adaptive survival.
How (not) to resolve the energy crisis
Increasing the share of renewable energy will not make us any less dependent on fossil fuels as long as total energy consumption keeps rising. Renewable energy sources do not replace coal, oil or gas plants, they only meet (part of) the growing demand. The solution is simple: set an absolute limit to total energy production. Why should we not be able to cope in 2030 with the amount of energy we consume today?
